Poetry By Susan Stewart - Poem 1

Sestina Sunrise

New Life bursts forth in subtle sunrise,
Golden glow radiating from the pivotal point,
Paired with clouds evolving from the same source,
Changing cool hues of night with sweep of brush.
Burnt orange clouds billow on a crashing wave
Between the sooted silhouettes of blackened palms.

Wispy fingers move in rhythm on the island palms
With strength of line against the sunrise.
Clouds form as a surfer’s longed-for wave,
Retreating from the danger of the rocky point,
Changing the colourful palette and the artist’s brush
With mystery emerging from the newest source.

Energy of light creates a powerful source
With changing patterns on the sharpened palms,
Created in the frenzy of the artist’s brush,
Capturing the mystery of the newest sunrise,
Leaving no doubt as to the point
Of the artist’s impression of the emotional wave.

Sand sculptures changed by a gentle wave,
Swirling and retreating to the source
Where nature’s hand guides the point
And human form is hidden in the palms.
The gentle hues reveal the wash of sunrise
With the light touch of the master’s brush.

Cadmium held within the soft haired brush
Applied with stroke of gentle wave,
Eager to capture the emerging sunrise
Before the clouds move from the source.
Changing reflections on the sharpening palms
Show a new shift from the focal point.

Light wind soon moves the composition point,
Changing the texture of the artist’s brush.
Colour replaces charcoal in the palms
And flatness the rolling of the wave.
White light’s exchanged for the golden source
As day breaks forth in sunrise.

Farewell sunrise with a change of brush,
New point of creation on a wave.
Source of light with swaying palms.
